In making the announcement, the Cubs said Castro would wear No. 13. To make room on the roster, infielder Chad Tracy was optioned to Triple-A Iowa.
Castro, who at the age of 20 years and 44 days is the youngest Cubs rookie since 19-year-old Oscar Gamble in 1969, impressed Lou Piniella in spring training and hit .376 with one homer, 14 extra-base hits and 20 RBIs in 26 games at Tennessee. He had four stolen bases but has been caught stealing five times.
