According to police reports:
Police responded shortly after 5 p.m. because of complaints of loud music.
Fanta Twannisa Mallard, 20, of 3302 Washington St., answered the door but was reluctant to let officers inside.
Officers could smell burnt marijuana, and once in the residence, they found her son on a mattress about 6 feet away from several baggies of crack-cocaine, and about 2 feet away from marijuana on the floor.
Police found Elvis Bynum Jr., 21, of Bellwood, Ill., hiding in the residence’s bathroom. Bynum, who was sweating profusely and appeared to police to be under the influence of narcotics, told officers he had purchased the crack-cocaine at the apartment complex for $10 a bag and had been smoking crack all day.
During the investigation, police found that Bynum was a registered sex offender but had not updated his address with the registry.
Police said Mallard admitted to smoking marijuana before driving her son elsewhere earlier in the day.
Police called the Department of Human Services and the child was taken into emergency custody.
Mallard was charged with possession of a controlled substance and endangerment. She was not in custody at the Johnson County Jail on Sunday but could not be reached for comment.
Bynum was charged with a controlled substance violation, possession of a controlled substance, gathering for the use of drugs, endangerment and failure to register as a sex offender. He was being held Sunday at the Johnson County Jail on $40,000 cash only bond.
